I understand the actress is very well-respected and a nice person, but I couldnt stand the Tilly character myself. But I would like to read some of the TNG books Ive heard about, especially the Destiny series which I know is a big crossover with all the classic shows and the Borg. It was a good perspective in S1, and lines up with Star Trek values. Age is affecting my memory haha. Even though he is one of the worst characters in Trek, he was the main focus in arguably the best episode of Voyager: Timeless. However, we do know that David Mack does. all the outfits here are golden IMO but those shoes murder! The immaturity of body shaming anyone is hateful and unacceptable. I realize there are people who like his quirks. So. And second of all, just to dig into it, you dont always get to see a woman like me in that sort of position. Mary Wiseman is confirmed to return as Sylvia Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, although whether she rejoins the crew or continues at Starfleet Academy and only interjects occasionally remains unknown. So sayeth Scotty, the contrarian. For someone who is supposed to care about others, shes been remarkably stuck in her own emotions. Everybody loves is an idiom, it should never be taken as a strict statement. Theres a difference between celebrating obesity and accepting individual human beings, treating them as human beings, and not targeting them specifically for emotional harassment. Correct me if I am wrong, but did she not have to take a command course at some point? I think the ship can handle a little chonk. Its not celebrating obesity to say that her body is her business and nobody elses. . But then again Im not a troll. Sure, its not perfect, we all have a nitpick here and there, but as long as it has a message, it revolves around people, and some cool science stuff, its trek to me. I suspect that Prodigy may use some of the elements that Beyer expanded or created for Full Circle without actually developing any of the overall story arc. I could watch Tilly all day! Theyre losers, pure and simple. I would imagine those who liked Barclay probably include a large portion of those who like Tilly. And I want to take care of me so I can continue to be me. I dont think Tilly is ruined. They should have tried to make Tilly more credible first. I dont see a repeated notion that DISCO saved Trek by heavily incorporating emotion into their characters. By the way, could of isnt English. Shes a little overweighed, so what? By: Laurie Ulster Exactly. Smart doesnt mean competent. That way she wont get the appearance she does now of jumping over more experienced officers and seeming to just get ahead because shes Sarus favorite. Like maybe he would be way too codependent or something? Star Trek: Discoverystreams exclusively onParamount+in the U.S. Mary Wiseman is a good actress but even with that, if Star Trek Discovery was shot in 80s or 90s producers would probably force her to go on a diet or even fire her. Yes, The Expanse. Just underused. And no one in their right mind would play poker with her. Mary shouldnt listen to the haters and Sonequa, I never noticed she looked any different than she did before, body wise. The Enterprise D was the only place we saw a councelor. As for the debate about sending the message being overweight is good: the heart of the issue is that everybodys body is their own, not health and physical fitness. Episodes will be available on Fridays internationally on Netflix. Just when it looks like the character has finally grown as a person and doing her own thing, comes right back. She wears 36D bra size and weighs 147 pounds. They have solved some of these issues the easy way by talking themselves out of it (Klingon hair, holograms, Ariam being no android at all), now that we are in the future none of it really matters anymore. I think Mary is amazingly pretty and has absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of her figure. Jack perhaps you were at the Dave Chappelle protest screaming Judas, you are starting to sound like the type who gets sensitive over everything. That was an awfully fast turnaround. But I did not watch DIS S4 either. Shes loved. I wonder if there is any news that she might be pregnant. Thats the thing about DSC. We want people to get their facts from reliable health sources, not celebrities, so saying actors should be sending some sort of fitness message is just backwards. Contents 1 Early life 2 Starfleet career 2.1 USS Discovery 2.1.1 The war 2.1.2 Post-war 2.1.3 32nd century 3 Personal relationships 3.1 Friendships The visual reboot premise was overstretched. Im reaally hoping season 4 will be smoother, Im holding thumbs here. Body shaming is wrong and immature. Im not counting on it. Rumors started when some problematic fans of Star Trek Discovery found out that she gained a few pounds between the seasons. She is super meta. Tilly should have been introduced as female Barclay or a less extreme version of junior lieutenant Picard in Tapestry (the alternate timeline where his career stalled after avoiding getting stabbed in the heart). Everybody loves ., meant literally, is never true. Why is that a command level position? Roddenberrys imprint on Next Gen made the characters not flawed enough for some tastes, granted, but Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise have countless examples of human foibles and emotions sure, not to the degree as Discovery, with its ship full of Barclays as one commenter put it, rhetorically. No one of my Trekkie friends, growing up with TNG watch this anymore. A statistical average does not justify shaming or ridiculing anyone. You made very good points and I do agree. But it would seem to me that it might ought to be standard practice to have a Betazed on the bridge on all starships if those stills were so needed. Discovery may have just said goodbye to one of its crew, but don't worry: She'll be back. Agree. I echo your sentiments exactly, David. Can Picard go round the sun once more and rescue Saru from Discovery? I love how Disco has put the human back into the human experience. That is not anything to diss. In fact most iterations of Trek the actors have provided a neutral delivery of their native accent. Hopefully its . Shes one of the shows most divisive characters. CBS/Paramount+ For Wiseman's Tilly, the danger and near-loss of all the cadets, including Adira (Blu del Barrio) forces her. Mary Wiseman as Captain Killy in Terra Firma, Part 2. Some folks here like this nu trek because it lowered standards to make them feel better about themselves. And yeah the Full Circle stories do sound a bit depressing especially since SPOILER ALERT they kill off Janeway in them! Actress Mary Wiseman did a series of media . At New York Comic Con, TrekMovie participated in some group interviews with members of the cast and crew, one of which was with the pair-up of Mary Wiseman (Tilly) and David Ajala (Book). I look at Disco as adding a new flavor to the existing universe. I like me. Im relieved to say I have no idea how that feels, and its something I cant even stomach thinking about, frankly. I think the CW has been using something like this for years. She is absolutely beautiful just as she is. Ridiculous or not, it has been well established in Trek canon that starships have counselors/therapists, and they are often used by the crew. But Tilly and the nervous mess Adira has devolved into? And I just let the writers take me on a journey. Shaming is one thing. I thought her arc was going to end with her being booted from the service for repeatedly failing physical fitness tests? I like seeing her in the series and like knowing that girls who are considered chunky by their teen or tween peers will know they can become something special and respectable, even if they dont have the ideal Hollywood body type. While Im excited to get back to the 32nd century and see whats changed since season 3 Im still not excited for the season itself. In season three Tilly was first officer and then acting captain; how does all of that affect who she is in season four? The Relaunch Litverse books for DS9 are uneven in my reading experience as compared to the TNG and the Voyager books once Beyer took over. Im sorry but what youve described about Tilly is like something out of a Nickelodeon teen high school drama. What accent? Tilly is the product of lazy writing and a lazy showrunner. )Granted, I think the special effects, space battles, bizarre technology and explosions are the proverbial tail wagging the dog, but thats always been the case, and is increasingly expected in these post-Star Wars, high tech decades. They basically wrote her off the show! It feels the only reason was to have a non-binary character, which after a few episodes ended up fading into the background with the rest of the furniture anyway. When Mary Wiseman's Lt. Sylvia Tilly left the USS Discovery for a job at the new Starfleet Academy in the fourth episode of season four, it was promised she would be back. It would make sense if you knew the story ;) Lets just say Jake did write his famous book a couple of years after the end of DS9, but in the years and decades ahead he went on to much bigger things and took his career and his life in a very different direction. That could be it. Even though she's still in the final season of Starfleet Aacademy studies She was assigned to the USS Discovery to get some practical experience. Me thinks that your issue is not that fans of nu trek are pandered to to feel better about themselves. But was it not made pretty clear that Counselors had become a regular thing on command crews in the TNG era? Yeah, self absorbed is an excellent way to describe her character, Id never thought of it that way. Where I live people compete on the merits and are proud of their professional or intellectual achievements not their bad habits, bad health or even born with attributes such as divergent sexual orientation that they had no influence over whatsoever. Its one thing thats definitely been improved upon by the more recent stuff. It makes it quite American centric. But it looks like TG47 answered your question! Since you said mum Im going to assume youre in the UK, and I can personally confirm that you can get some great help, including face to face therapy, through the NHS, for free. Mention one thing or person loved by EVERYBODY. Basically a good officer whos been in Starfleet for some years but her career stalled due to emotional and self-esteem issues. I like the way you think! No spoilers in case I ever decide to actually the write the thing, but youd love it as a DS9 fan. You can absolutely argue that DISCO incorporates too much emotion with their characters (something I agree with to an extent), but I do appreciate how much more real these characters feel compared to past characters (especially in the early seasons of TNG). Funny enough, I have never had a problem with Wesley. I hope that Wiseman uses that info into the future because it does work for fat burning and muscle building.. I keep reading she shouldnt be in Starfleet because she is socially and emotionally immature. GD, what shoes is David wearing in those pics? Theres even a scene where she pretty much turns to the camera and says that shell stay till the very end. Tilly is not a perfect officer. Ill never forget when I, a woman of 160# at 58, healthy, deemed fit by military and bodyfat percentage indexes, approached the Credit Union one day, when the guy at the ATM finished his transaction, turned, saw me, and yelled Hey, fatass!. I think Mary Wiseman is a fantastic actress..the writing for Tilly is an abomination. Its really just certain comments sections and Facebook garbage holes. She gets up in the morning and lives with a purpose, helping her crewmates, and ready to make the ultimate sacrifice if necessary. I dont understand this at all. They just didnt do much with him. It's mostly the super-hero genre where you see this. All Access Star Trek Podcast, Discovery, DS9, Lower Decks, Section 31, Star Trek 4, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Prodigy, Strange New Worlds. Heck I think it was more unrealistic when some chick was upset he wasn't ready for sex. Or are you only a troll if you criticize something about Discovery? Gotta side with Sascha here. As long as Wesley Crusher exists she will always be in a race for that title. Wiseman would be smart to ignore the haters because their posts are rooted in negativity and hate. Ive re-learned through life experiences how to stop and smell the roses again you might say, among other things. And others opinions dont factor in. And with Troi being a betazoid, thats why she was on the bridge. Right!? The burden is now on SNWThat show can either make or break it with regards to these issues. First of all, because theres more options for cosplay now, because she changed her hair. The fourth episode of the new season of Star Trek: Discovery ("All is Possible") arrived this morning and it has fans buzzing about Lt. Sylvia Tilly. Its good to have ALL type of people/stories in our Star Trek Universe. She is perhaps, the most human character on the show. Rather than shaming them or acting like there are only a few kinds of women worth aspiring to be. Barclays ticks do get really annoying. There have been moments where they tried to do that, but like everything else on Discovery where self-doubt and emotional scenes of worry in darkly-lit rooms need to be front and center, they always seemed to bring Tilly back to spazzing out because she was nervous about whether she can do it before being put on a mission. Full Circle is pretty dark in some ways. Tillys character arc was mishandled once they realized Mary Wiseman was cast (Marys a decade or more older than Tilly). Heaven forefend women feel good about themselves! It would definitely be great if Rhys was promoted to first officer. Martin-Green says she has come to accept changes in her body, especially after the birth of her second child shortly before production on season three: With my first pregnancy I bounced back without trying (which is a crime, by the way, that we expect women to do that after birth rather than focus on healing). American actress Mary Wiseman was born on July 30, 1985. From the next episode on season 3 which was at least okay up to that point started to completely fall apart. We need to examine our highest ideals and allegiances to reveal our preconceived notions, shallow knee-jerk reactions, and find the truth about our choices. but it looks like she did simply did it because she was her friend and room mate. Fans need to stop being rude and act like gentlemen for once. If you read what Mary and Sonequa are saying, they arent promoting any particular body style or fitness choice, just that they are as they are and only they have the right to choose how that should be. (laughs). Maybe Saru wont be on the ship as much but Im guessing they are going the same direction. I just dont remember if it was something I read years ago or if it was in an interview with Gene. He was non-military, the same height as me, and easily weighed 300#. Sonequa, Their characters are fantastic as are all the others. Sort of the same way Spock stayed first officer in the movies to Kirk although he was a captain for five of those films. This time, even if I wanted that, my body said: no were going to take some time here, we need to heal. And so, I find myself in this bigger, fuller body and it made me appreciate where I was before. And, yeah, I've also heard a rumor about a potential Starfleet Academy series, and I'm assuming it's being set in the future setting of Discovery. Promoting her to the first officer was stupid enough, but now shes leading at the Academy? I actually had an entire epic story mapped out that I was seriously considering turning into a series of novels. Yes I forgot David Mack is a consultant on this show too and is well aware of all the post-Nemesis stories in the novels. the only one worth saving.. quite possibly the most irritating character in Trek history. Plenty of curvy ladies are quite healthy and active. No it says a lot about the incredibly dangerous message she is sending. Paradise was most likely referring to the shows production and creative teams. Wasnt it Saru who made Tilly the First Officer? Picard is the third Kurtzman Production. I think Saru holds out as being the most consistent, and Tilly is close, but not quite. Overall, I like the fun character of Tilly (too bad the writers room made her first officer). It feels too 21st century specific as does Tillys. I would prefer to finish the rest of Prodigy first season instead. The only thing she is qualified for at Starfleet Academy is as a 23rd century specialist. DS9 Avatar books 1 and 2 were quite good and helpfully kicked off the DS9 Relaunch sequence. This is not a good show and not a good Star Trek Show too. Well, the entire point is she absolutely looks the way I expect her to. Body shaming is just another category of bullying, with the same general goal of the shamer making him/herself feel superior by putting down others around them, rather than elevate him/herself with goodwill and compassion. In her interview with TrekMovie last week, Discovery co-showrunner Michelle Paradise echoed these sentiments: Well never be done with Tilly. You can start with those or the later books in the Time to sequence without significant confusion. Was that really a Betazoid characteristic or was she just reading faces and gestures? Sonequa is a great actress. [1] Early life [ edit] Wiseman is the youngest daughter of Dorothy and Kevin Wiseman and has three older brothers. From what Ive read, having her on the bridge because of her betazed abilities was what Roddenberry had in mind. Shes magnetic. With his skill and abilities, we will see how he may use them in a way that may affect his relationship with Michael Burnham. Weve seen Captain Killy, so what does Mirror Universe Book look like? Overweight and obesity are a leading health risk identified by the World Health Organization.
